A little while back I was presented with a business opportunity that I had not yet considered. An associate of mine (you know who you are) needed a design fast for a client he was working with. Since his business was on a fast track, there was no time for him to do the work himself.
After I did the design for him I came to a revelation. After discussing it with my business partner, we decided to branch out our services in a new way.
Now, instead of offering just our core services (though this is still our focus), a fair amount of our monthly profits come from doing side work for other firms and web professionals. We offer designs, content writing, and website themes. We have also sold scripts and whole websites we have created. This brings up a great point that few consider about business.
Small things can create a big impact. Through thinking outside the box and recognizing an opportunity when it came knocking, we were able to find a whole new income source that generated easy and quick money and now finances our business.
So what can Entrepreneurs learn from this?
1. Networking. I cannot stress enough the importance of networking. Having good connections with others opens up opportunities that otherwise would not exist.
2. Open up to opportunities. Make sure your talents are know to those you network with. Even if you don’t directly offer your services to associates, sometimes opportunities arise.
3. Don’t dismiss alternatives. Outsourcing is not our core business but after trying it out we found it is a great income stream. Take the time to consider opportunities (while following certain principles) and try new things.
4. Recognize opportunities when they come. We could have just left it at that one job but instead we figured out how to turn a single opportunity into a part of our business model.
5. Get creative. Easier said then done, I know. But if you try to think outside the box, it is amazing what the mind can generate. If you get creative you can figure out ways to increase your income with the talents you already have or by offering your services in a new way.
P.S. If you need any of the services mentioned above, you know how to get in touch with me.
